The Purpose of Parenting
Parenting on PurposeNovember 3, 2024 // Pastor John Hill
You can read all the books and listen to all the podcasts about how to parent and what your goal should be, but chances are you’re still left feeling like it’s not quite right. Jesus gives us the answer to the purpose of parenting and what goals as parents we should work towards and you won’t want to miss it in the first week of our Parenting on Purpose series!
Sermon Discussion Questions
- How do you think the stages of parenting (Commander, Coach, Consultant) impact the development of independence in children?
- Why might some parents find it challenging to adjust their role as their children grow? Can you think of situations where you’ve seen this struggle?
- Jesus suggests that to enter the Kingdom of Heaven, one must “be like a child.” What qualities of children do you think this refers to, and how might these qualities relate to faith?
- The message describes how people often approach God like a consultant, then a coach, and finally as a commander. How does this progression in faith resonate with your personal experiences or views on spiritual maturity?
- The speaker suggests that true parenting success is not in creating independent children, but in shifting their dependence from parents to God. What might this look like in everyday parenting, and how might it influence the way children view faith?
