“Controlling Emotions”
Key Scriptures
- “’You have heard that our ancestors were told, ‘You must not murder. If you commit murder, you are subject to judgment.’ 22 But I say, if you are even angry with someone, you are subject to judgment!” Matthew 5:21-22
- “You have heard the commandment that says, ‘You must not commit adultery.’ 28 But I say, anyone who even looks at a woman with lust has already committed adultery with her in his heart.” Matthew 5:27-28
- “For everything there is a season, a time for every activity under heaven… 4 A time to cry and a time to laugh. A time to grieve and a time to dance.” Ecclesiastes 3:1, 4
- “Since you have been raised to new life with Christ, set your sights on the realities of heaven, where Christ sits in the place of honor at God’s right hand. 2 Think about the things of heaven, not the things of earth. 3 For you died to this life, and your real life is hidden with Christ in God. 4 And when Christ, who is your life, is revealed to the whole world, you will share in all his glory.” Colossians 3:1-4
- “Fools vent their anger, but the wise quietly hold it back.” Proverbs 29:11
- “Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s love? Does it mean he no longer loves us if we have trouble or calamity, or are persecuted, or hungry, or destitute, or in danger, or threatened with death? … 37 No, despite all these things, overwhelming victory is ours through Christ, who loved us. 38 And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God’s love. Neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow—not even the powers of hell can separate us from God’s love. 39 No power in the sky above or in the earth below —indeed, nothing in all creation will ever be able to separate us from the love of God that is revealed in Christ Jesus our Lord.” Romans 8: 35,37-39
Reflect on What You’ve Heard
-
Who are some people that you have entrusted with your emotions that you probably should not?
-
Where are you allowing your emotions to burn, where they should not be burning?
- Where in your life are you tempted to take emotional shortcuts?
Pray it Out
Jesus, thank you for giving us so much knowledge about how to handle our emotions. Thank you for blessing us with emotions! Please give me the wisdom to use emotions in a way that lets me win the battle of my mind, amen.
